« on: December 09, 2025, 03:05:24 pm »
Hello

Is someone able to inform me how to set up a HP8904A Multifunction Synthesizer to output two-tones on the same BNC 1 connector. (High).
Thanks in advance.

read manual its very clear and well written if you have no idea what electronics is (its like the sesame street of manuals as far as manuals go). I just forgot what options you need if any to do this. Its mixers

The unit has Opt.01.
I have tried to understand pages 2-13 and 2-16 as well as many more in the manual regarding summation of signals.
There is no correspondence between the values in the tables and the text as I understand it.
It is very confusing.
Hoping for some help along the way.

ok you can unlock some things, pitty you don't have the dual output unit (that is hardware)

When you have internal channels it means that channel 1 makes your baseline (be it a DC offset, sine wave, etc) and then the other channels can add or multiple with that channel to make a complex output.

So you put sine wave channel 1, 100mv offset channel 2, and 100 hz FM channel 3, what will happen if you link them is that your sinewave will be FM modulated by 100hz and haved a 100mv offset. It does it like math, like you did in physics class, with adding or multiplying functions.

chapter 2 tells you exactly what to push

I am unclear of what you need help with.

How do you understand the combination of the parameters in table 2-13 to look? It would be easy enough to draw it on graph paper and see how it differs from the picture.

It is possible the manual has a drawing error, but you would need to draw the waveform with the parameters they give you using basic function math and compare it

Get yourself a copy of the "Agilent 8904A Multifunction Synthesizer Catalog".

It is a sort of recipe book for the various waveforms that can be generated by this device. You should be able to find something in this document that meets your requirements.

First of all, thanks for the link.
I have tried to understand chapter 2, but unfortunately I am not successful.
Even though I have a technical education.
The task is simple:
Get two tones out on output 1 simultaneous as shown on the photo.
700 Hz and 1900 Hz.
Amplitude: 3mV.
To be used for IMD measurements on transmitter equipment.
Chan.A and Chan.B should probably be used.
But how, that is the question.
I am able to get one frequency out, but not two.
