Title: Anybody have experience with Ultrasonic Flaw Detectors (NDT)?
Post by: V_King on March 01, 2017, 09:04:15 pm
Hello,

does anybody have any experience with ultrasonic flaw detectors?

I am doing a welding project which involves some waterproof welds and am interested in buying a NDT tester to check for cracks. I used one GE manufactured one in uni and really liked the results, but the price is out of my scope. On the other hand there is a good condition Krautkramer Branson USD 10 (a bit older vintage  :) ) from army surplus store but it does not have probes. The connections look like BNC ones, but I am not sure. Does anybody know whether the probes are universal for these type of testers or are they manufacturer specific?

Any other thoughts/recommendations in regards to these testers?

Thanks

I'm not sure if the probes (transducers) are standard among manufacturers.
I think there a few ultrasonic test methods in NDT and they select different transducers depending on the type of test.

You'll need to select the correct probe for the type of beam you think you need to look for what you are looking for... and the right couplant. Unless you're putting the whole thing under water?

I used Hamikleer and it was quite messy. I used Sonatest machines. I even visited the factory!

Plus you might want ASTM test and step blocks.

Also you'll find various weird connectors like Microdot being used on the probes themselves, the testers usually use BNC, or LEMO.
