Should I grab a Rigol DG2102 for 400CAD?!
« on: April 15, 2026, 06:12:27 pm »
I just caught it somewhere used for 400CAD, but I'm really trying to save specially for a proper linear power supply (I got a random amazon switching "Jesverty" one).
I partially want it for learning, the other use case is testing cables/probes, the other other use is that in case i ever (well I might never) build my own FET active probe etc. I could use it to test it. The other use case is testing and debugging electronics but that won't need more than 25mhz I feel like, usually more like 600khz. I'd also really appreciate an electronic load tho for my simple use-case I'd probably just DIY one with a bunch of MOSFETs and an op-amp or something (I'm sure I can figure it out or find a schematic somewhere)
I'd mainly not feel too much of a need for one but it's just catching it for 400CAD is making me think maybe I could sin just this once and save more later... it's usually 1400CAD + tax here.

Thoughts? Sometimes i wonder if I should just quit this hobby and cut my losses as it's so expensive but I'm too deep in  :-DD

Tempting for sure but it won't directly interface with your SDS800X HD to run the Bode plot feature.

Instead keep an eye out for a SDG* model.

Wait they can connect directly to your scope?! I had no idea! These things are so expensive, god knows if I'll ever find anything near 100mhz for this cheap! Maybe one day I'll be super rich :) Probably not but a girl can dream

You can find an SDG2042X used in that price range if you're patient. That model can be improved to 120MHz.

Bode plot mode takes total control of at least one channel of a SDG to provide the stimulus for the Frequency Response Analysis sweep which for all current SDS models is 120 MHz max.
The scope takes control of the SDG via USB or LAN connection where USB connection is true Plug n Play.

The SDG model used determines the max frequency of the Bode plot result.
SDG1032X or SDG2042X are models that have been around for a bit that you might find second hand and both for us have been very reliable.
SDG1022X Plus is the new kid on the block and well worth a look at if you can find the budget.

Thank you all for saving my money!

I’ll keep an eye out for a SDG2042X and upgrade it to 120 :)
