BK 1570A Recovery
(1/1)
watchmaker:
So I bought a BK 1570A for $90.  When it arrived, the Post Office had crashed the box onto the floor from a serious height.  Landed right on the knobs.  Worked kind of sort of, but really of little use.  Inside and outside the box showed where the knobs hit.  I mean both panels were pushed in about 6 mm.  The Horizontal knobs were really pushed in, the Plexi glass scale cover was cracked, all pots were at a sick angle.  Forget about getting a manual trigger.

Too bad.  This was a unit from State University of NY, Fredonia.  S/N 331 even.  So I bought another one from that seller and started a return.  He told me to keep it.

Was not worth the time,  but what the Hell.  No guts no glory.

Spent about 6 hours taking it apart and straightening out the frame behind the cover panels.  Just getting the knobs off was interesting, forget about moving all the boards out of the way.

Cleaned everything with contact cleaner while I was there, checked for loose connectors and such.  Found two broken grounds in the vertical section.

Put it back together and fired it up.  This is one serious piece of kit.  I just used BK's user manual to make a precise time measurement to calculate a frequency.  Within one Hz!

But the real story is BK!  Other than the broken ground straps, everything is happy as a pig in mud.  I attached a couple photos I sent the seller.  Who today makes things this survivable?

I did find the Service Manual for a rebadged 1570A and BK sent me the user manual and schematic, gratis!  If there is someplace I should upload them please let me know.

This will help me understand the Siglent better.  But now I have to figure out what to do with two 1570A scopes.  If the second one comes in and looks like the first one before the PO dropped it, I may adjust both and then keep the better one.

BTW, anyone know of a "kid" who would like a 2003 Agilent with floppy for the cost of shipping?  Two channels.

Now I have to go back to learning matrix algebra to solve ckt equations.  Damn!

Regards,

Dewey
