BM786 doesn't turn on sometimes
(1/1)

Hi,

I bought a BM786 on Amazon over a year ago and it's out of warranty.

The thing doesn't turn on sometimes. Nothing on the screen. Batteries checked, replaced. Messed with the battery holder contacts. Measured V at the contacts. I've barely used it 10 times before it started happening.

Are there any common problems with these things I can take a look at?

Cheers

Look for dirt on the selector switch.

Dave did a video recently where he received a couple of returned meters with this issue at the exact same time. Sounds like a manufacturing QA issue with a specific lot of meters. It's been awhile since I watched the video and don't recall the diagnosis if any, but check it out and see if this is what you're seeing? Check to see if the dates on these meters matches yours (as I recall Dave was reading the dates backwards on one of these meters, but they were actually from the same dates or very close together).

Thanks for the video! I guess I'll subscribe to EEVBlog2 :) I did see another one

That's close to what I'm seeing. It works for a bit, then after a few days it just conks out and doesn't turn on at all. If I leave it for a while it just starts working again.

No solution in the video. Looks like it's not power or the switch. Dave reckons it's CPU/reset state issues.

This serial is 222117xxxx

Cheers for the suggestion. I didn't see any dirt inside, but didn't take the switch cover out. That video pretty much shows it's most likely not the switch.
