Brymem BM859s information available?
Angus:
hey everyone
of course I have noticed that a lot of users here are highly satisfied with Brymem multimeters. Not only price/performance wise but given the quality alone.
I was wondering why there is so little information about the Brymem 859s meters. These caught my eye because they do look very familiar, size is not too giant and accuracy is good.
BM859s won't support low impedance measurements on mains if I understand correctly, but mains measurements are not intended. I want something to use for electronics work (on the bench) but (space-wise) I am not able to use a benchtop multimeter.
Can you tell me why this line of multimeters seems to be less popular than e.g. BM78x or BM869s in particular? Did I miss something important or am I just too blind to find the information?
thank you

I think it's because there's not much difference in price and the others look more modern/sexy.
The specs don't lie though and the 857/859 are very good meters. I own one and I know a few other people here do too. It has all the functions I need and is simpler to use than those others (some dial positions on those other meters have four functions to toggle through, the 857/859 don't).
I'd definitely buy another one if this one ever breaks.

I do not know the actual reason for their popularity. What I know is Brymen meters become more popular when Dave started selling them and they got promoted via this forum members. By the time they got popular Brymen came up with newer models, like BM860 series. BM850 series has been rebranded and sold by a couple of brand names.
The main difference that I can see between BM850 and BM 860 from their specs is that the later model has been designed and tested to a much higher transient levels, 12kV. The older ones, BM 850 series were tested up to 8kV transients.

Price difference only 20€ (welectron) and dual dusplay in case of the 869s.
Maybe that is it.
Me I got a 869s, but optically I like the 859s better, reminds me of the fluke 87... ;)

Dave did a video here:
You can see size comparisons, etc.
Ignore the rant about the BM857's backlight, it's completely fixed now. Mine has a nice orange color:
