Brymen BM857, looking for a link cable
« on: April 12, 2021, 03:56:26 pm »
I am tempted to buy one unit but I also I need a cable to log some values. When I asked the seller if the RS232 adapting cable is included he answered this

It should be purchased separately. There are the following accessories included: test leads, holster and battery.

Unfortunately he doesn't have any cable for sale, and I don't know where to buy it. I wonder ... is there a guide or an hack to make an homemade one?

Edit:
BM857

The cable is called BU-86X and is USB only.
You can get it and the meter at: https://www.welectron.com/ or https://brymen.eu/

The software is include on a CD or can be downloaded from Brymen.
You can also use https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/program-that-can-log-from-many-multimeters/ for logging, it is considerable more advanced than the Brymen software.

If you want a Brymen meter with RS232 check the BM257s and interface BRUA-20X, again there is Brymen software and the other software listed above.

Wrong model, I meant this: BM857

The Brymen BM857 is a 50000 counts (500000 DC V), CAT III (1000V) / CAT IV (600V) handheld digital multimeter with RS232 connectivity. The BM859s is also supported, it uses the same protocol. Adapter kits ship with IR to RS232 cables, and include RS232 to USB converters.

Extech SW-810a kit
The BC-85Xa RS232 cable is a kit sold by Extech, containing the BC-85Xa RS232 cable, the BUA2303 USB-to-serial adapter, a USB cable, and a software disc.

This is the connector:

For the software I am willing to write my own software for Linux, I have the documentation about the protocol.

A seller answered this

We can include a full accessory set - KIT BRUA-85XA for an additional EUR 60 if you are interested.

60 Euro umm ... I wonder if someone has already built an homemade BRUA-85XA-like adapter  :D

One alternative is the embedblog adapter here http://embedblog.eu/?p=475. Schematic and 3d-print are free and he also sells the unit for very reasonable 10 EUR. The ATTiny adapter expects a BM869S for signal decoding, but you can configure it to send raw data to the USB port. This way it will work with almost all Brymens.
I purchased one myself for a BM829s and configured an Excel spreadsheet to translate the raw data. Works very reliably and gives me more flexibility than with the original cable.

Tme.eu sells the BRUA-85XA for US$40.77 (at least for me)
https://www.tme.com/br/pt/details/kitbrua-85xa/medidores-software/brymen/kit-brua-85xa/

I have its older version BR85X (BC-85X-1), which is RS232C only and it was the only compatible (I think) with the older versions of the BM857/859 (non A, or S).

Check the last photo of my page at:

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...
