Busted Tek TDS1001C-EDU
« on: January 17, 2014, 10:14:05 pm »
Apparently one of our techs at work fed his scope a little too much voltage. We test high voltage products here and he thinks he had a transient spike up to 6000V during a stability test. I doubt his front end saw near that much since we use a 1000:1 divider, but still it does seem to be busted.

It powers on and eventually just sits at a blue screen that tells me the model number and serial number and probably firmware revision. So to me it seems like it self tests and then stops when trying to communicate with what they call the "main board" in the service manual. I guess I was thinking I'd find something in the input stage and just replace it, but I don't have any experience with Tek's digital scopes.

What do you guys think? Is it worth bothering with? Or should I just toss it?

Its quite possible that he killed the input stage but its also quite possible that its a coincidence. Most of these tend to be pretty difficult to repair unless you find something simple. Its up to you on what you want to try and if it's worth your time.

If all else fails you can give it to me rather than tossing it ;D I'd love to play with trying to fix it. heck I'd love just tearing it down even if its FUBAR.

Looks like they decided to send it out for repair. I suggested they find out if a new one will be cheaper, of course.
