Can anyone recommend a wireless car battery monitor (12V)?
« on: February 19, 2024, 10:14:46 am »
Can anyone recommend a car battery monitor that sends an undervoltage alarm to my smartphone?
I need the device to detect sporadic battery discharge.
The discharges only occur irregularly, but in the event of a fault the engine can no longer be started.
The starter battery has been replaced several times in the past, but in the long run this becomes expensive and does not solve the cause.

BM6 from aliexpress, cost 15 EUR, average current about 1.5mA. Connects to android app over ble, it gather battery voltage in the background. I have no idea how big is the buffer but I'm connecting app every one week and have all the data - app does not connected automatically when it is close to the car, you have to enable (start) it manually. Big minus: probably sends gps location to the chinese servers. I also bought Vgate BM100 but don't have enough cars to test all the stuff I have ;)

What's the radio range of the BM6?
The voltage history is stored in the device or smartphone?
Which Android version is required at least?

My BM6 has VERY short Bluetooth range;  I have to get within 6 ft.  I would love to find a WiFi battery monitor, so I'll be monitoring this post for suggestions ; :)

In case of my car range is above 5m, BM6 lies on the battery but it is close to windshield so there is no strong attenuation. BM6 stores battery voltage on chip and transfers to phone when connected. It is cheap and consumes relatively low current but this is not ideal solution. Wifi will consume much more energy and I don't think range will be much better with internal antenna. I curious if there are better solution - maybe something dedicated for camper-vans with current consumption logging?

The BM6 hardware arrived today.

Now I need the app but I don't have a google (play) account.
Could one of you be so kind to upload the BM6-apk file (PM me the download link if you want)?

Thanks!

Thank you both!
I can't imagine what the Chinese developer wants to do with my location data (Google is also sucking out my location data)...
I don't see it as too critical since I only need the BM6 tool to solve a battery drain problem.
Once the issue is resolved, the app and BM6 hardware will be uninstalled.

not becoming paranoiac, but using it on a wifi guest network if possible seems safer !
