Can Rigol DP832 do ATX?
« on: August 05, 2015, 11:01:24 pm »
So I'm working on some Meridian audio equipment (highly glorified PC architecture) with a bad power supply. I need simultaneous +/-12VDC, 5VDC, and Common. Staring at my DP832, I dimly remembered something untoward about sense/power lines tied to ground so I got skittish about tying reds to blacks to greens. Instead, I went into the parts bin and pulled out an old Dell ATX supply from a long-gone PC. There was my +/-12, 5, common easy-peasy (yellow, blue, red, black). Voila!

So did I dodge a bullet with the DP832, miss a section in a manual somewhere, or need to do Electronics 101 all over again at the local CC? Thanks for any and all responses.

This is the relevant post.

From that post :

The DP832 has channel 2 and channel 3 GND (negative terminals) connected internally.

So you want to wire it so that the negative of channel 2 (and thus channel 3's negative too) is your main ground reference.

Yes, you can do it. Expanding on what codeboy2k said, if you want +12/-12/+5 you should set CH1=12V, CH2=12V, CH3=5V, and common together CH1+, CH2-, and CH3-. Then you will have -12 at CH1-, +12 at CH2+, and +5 at CH3+. You can also tie your common ground to the case ground (green), which I think a real ATX supply would.

The DP832 is pretty "small" for an ATX PSU (I'd call it effectively a 55 - 60 watter given that no one ever draws much from -12V; maybe even lower if the 5V is the limiting factor) so I hope your gear doesn't draw that much :)
