Cenco #82817-04 Decade Resistor
« on: November 12, 2022, 02:28:34 am »
Are these supposed to be any good?

I saw one today at my "local" electronics re-cycling shop for $30 CDN.  The switches feel awesome and it measured bang-on with my Brymen 786.

They wouldn't let me "take it apaaart" so I don't know what the level of care was taken in manufacturing.

Any one have more intimate experience with these?

I guess at $30 ($23 US) I should just buy it for laughs and giggles.  It doesn't say where it's made but externally it's built like a brick dunny.

I went out and bought it yesterday.

As I said, externally it's fairly nice.  Great case, big aluminum knobs and a very nice switch feel.

Inside?  Well it's not much to write home about.

The resistors are 0.5% metal film.  The switches don't look as good as they feel.

I suspect the resistors are hand selected too as when I dialed up 2.345K I got 2.346, so not bad.

It is worth the $23.

Hi Bill.

Just wondering where is your local electronics re-cycling shop. I am looking for some place to find nice stuff, like this one.

Cenco, short for Central Scientific Co., is an old-line manufacturer dating back before 1900, now known as CSC Scientific.
During my high-school education, their equipment was ubiquitous in school physics laboratories.
Their current focus is on laboratory measurement equipment, rather than school lab equipment.

They advertise on eBay: https://www.ebay.ca/str/electronicdistributorsintl

If I see what I like I usually send an offer to Sean directly and then go pick-up in person.  With me being in Muskoka, I don't have many other choices, but Sean is good to deal with.

Thanks for let me know.

I'll check out their items on Ebay. Since I live in London, Orillia is a bit far from me.

I have this ancient 6 decade resistance box:

testgear/list-your-test-equipment-score-here!

It is likely older than I am…
But it still functions quite well.
