Clamp meter choices - amprobe/brymen?
« on: October 29, 2017, 12:48:21 pm »
I'm looking to buy a reasonably priced DC/AC clamp meter, primarily for general electrical use but it would be nice for it to read low DC amps for fault-finding automotive/electronics.
I understand I would probably be better served with two separate meters but I hope to find a compromise in one.

I've had Brymen DMMs before and very happy with them so I have been considering their 079 (Amprobe 320) and 089 (Amprobe 330) clamps but can't find many opinions on them. The motor rotation feature is not essential but could be quite handy along with the VFD.

It seems the 089 has a better backlight and current rating and potentially deals with VFD better – but the larger clamp looks like it could be a hindrance.

Does anybody have any opinions on these meters or recommendations for similar alternatives I should look at?
I quite like the look of the Hioki 4371, but they seem more expensive and difficult to get in the UK.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, monkey_magic

The Uni-T UT210E has a one DC mA resolution and is reasonably priced.

Thank you SkyMaster,

I did check out the Uni-T and it would make a nice electronics meter but I really want something with a good CAT III/IV rating for mains use.

Have you looked at Metrel current clamps? I use one which has builtin power measurement functionality, including harmonics and is also sensitive enough for earth leakage measurements. Cost is about £300 for a new one.

I hadn't looked at Metrel, but interestingly they also appear to be rebadging Brymen meters. Which Metral did you have?
I suppose it does give a few options for finding the best deal.

Metrel MD 9221

Amprobe AMP-320

Brymen 079

Had to go find the model number. It's a Metrel MD9272. Very handy little meter.
I didn't know that about them rebadging brymen meters. I'll keep that in mind, thanks.
