Common problems with Fluke 87-V speaker?
(1/2) > >>
george graves:
My 87-V, that I got about a year ago, the continuity tone isn't working anymore - well, it so faint that I have to put the DMM up to my ear to even hear it.  It's there - just really, really faint.

Is this a common problem?  Dave mentioned something about it on the lastest 87-V GSM fix video about how the speaker mounts - and it got me thinking...

Is there a easy fix?  Or is it time to send it in?

(It's my only quality meter, so I'd rather not go without it for a few weeks.  My only choice is to buy a second one before I send it in - so I'm hesitant to do that)

I think that is time to replace the battery on it ..  ;)
Other than that, any DMM speaker can get some damage from accidental droppings.

Just for comparison, get another DMM and measure the volts on the beeper of the 87V when is active.
By this measurement we would able to compare and tell, if the problem is on the 87V circuitry, or just in the speaker.
george graves:
The 9 volt is good, I replaced it just as good measure.  Still the same problem.

I didn't bother mentioning the voltage on the speaker.

Rats.

In this case I will not bother typing another message in this thread..
Zero999:
Maybe he doesn't have another meter capable of measuring a true RMS over the audio bandwidth or an oscilloscope so measuring the voltage across the speaker wouldn't give meaningful results?

It sounds like a loose connection is responsible for this.
