comparison between TEKTRONIX 492 and RIGOL DSA815TG
« on: November 28, 2024, 10:19:48 pm »
Hello, i want to buy a spectrum for my lab. Im working on RF equipment, amplifiers, LPF etc in frequencies max of 200Mhz. Size is not a problem, and the price for the two spectrums with added TR503 on the TEKTRONIX is about the same.
Please what do you say on that? Pros and Cons???

Thank you
George

Don't know anything about Rigol but I have Tek492 and Advantest R4131A. I really hate 492 but paid 300 eur and it has 21GHz so I'm using it from time to time. Worst thing is that you have to manually peak internal mixer bias. Dynamic range is also poor. In the past I had HP 8559 (also 21GHz) and this was my best SA, Advantest is also nice but dynamic range is worse (and 3.5GHz only). Tek was never good at SAs - HP 141 was also a terrible boat archor. If we are talking about 40 years old instrument best is to look on HP.

I have both the DSA815TG and a Tektronix 2754 spectrum analyzer (which is a slightly "better" version of the 492).  The Tek spectrum analyzers are hopelessly complicated, not particularly well thought out in the user interface area, and are not for the novice when they need repair (assuming you can get the microwave assemblies).

If I'm looking at spectra below 1.5 GHz, there is no reason I would ever turn on my Tek 2754.  So if you are sure that you don't need/want higher frequency coverage, get the Rigol.  A simple choice in my opinion.

Thanks for the replies, i will get the rigol. I was thinking the age of the TEK and its full of tantalum capacitors and other parts that they are ready to die and im afraid to give my money and dont have support.
