Title: Configuring your multimeter leads
Post by: VK5RC on May 29, 2015, 08:14:21 am
I  have always tended to use my multimeter with the negative lead with a clip and the positive as a point,  I thought it would be interesting to see how others use their dmm.

It purely depends on what you are doing.  Even for my little pocket DMM I have a selection of clips and adapters that fit on the 2mm probes, including 0.025" square pin adaptors for breadboards, ribbon cable connectors etc.

Two probes - Checking mounted components with power off etc.
One probe, one clip - general voltage & signal testing, checking reasonably sized loose leaded components.
Two clips - Anything high energy, or difficult to access or needing extended monitoring.

Usually two points unless of course I'm doing a 4-wire measurement which tends to be easier with kelvin clips.

I do use an assortment as well, in fact I have a little tray of clips and probes etc that lives on the desk that I can swap easily but I typically use the clip-probe combo for most. For HV, like tautech, I definitely use clips, get out the safety glasses and stand back from the bench! (Makes chicken noises) HiHi.

I have used the Deluxe Pomona test lead set that I got when I got my fluke 87 about 37 years ago. Love the ability to plug on whatever is most appropriate instantly. The pic below is the modern version of the set I have.
