Choosing a USB Tester: Atorch UD18 vs UD24
« on: December 27, 2024, 10:58:41 pm »
I have been trying to find a budget USB tester, but it's surprisingly hard to find actual reviews of these, especially in English.

I had narrowed it down to three models, the UD18 and UD28 by Atorch and the MakerHawk tester.

I was originally looking at a cheaper and much more limited Atorch tester, but then I realized that they have an official(??? is it? Or someone pretending to be them) storefront on Aliexpress where it's much cheaper and I can get a better model.

UD18

UD24

MakerHawk:

I do like that the MakerHawk one appears to be made in the US and has some better build quality, but it says it only goes up to 3 Amps and I want to test for up to 5 Amps of draw.

I tried using YouTube first to look up reviews of these three testers. Problem is most of the views weren't really a review on if the device is accurate, works properly, or has any issues but more of an unboxing and just using it to show that it works (half the time with the person not even knowing what they were doing half the time). The others were not in English... Even after all these videos I can't even tell what the difference between the UD18 and UD24 are other than their shape, even their price is roughly the same.

A lot of the videos also called them the "Mustool" brand devices, but when I try to look that up I can't find much. Did Mustool change their name to Atorch? Or are the Atorch versions bootleg knockoffs of what was once Mustool?

Then I tried Googling written reviews, but that was fruitless. The first result was from a four year old post on this very forum, but it was mostly unanswered and talked about different testers even though the Atorch ones I was trying to find information about were in the topic title. Other results were mostly the same, other forums or reddit posts that dies out after a small amount of replies that didn't really talk about anything or talked about entirely different devices.

So can anyone give me advice on these three? Or anything similar around the same pricepoint? I am just trying to test several USB A and USB C chargers for how much voltage and amps (up to 5) they can deliver as well as how much of that voltage/amps several of my USB devices draw, not trying to engineer a professional device down to 0.001 precision of voltage.

Good Morning Cyber Akuma,    I like my J7-c, which goes by other names.   https://lygte-info.dk/review/USBmeter%20USB%20Digital%20Tester%20J7-c%20UK.html
I like that it is easy to operate, as it has only one button.   I also have a UG24, which I use often and it has a easy to read display.
