DMM sized power supply
« on: July 05, 2016, 12:35:14 pm »
A colleague just showed off his new DC power supply.
http://www.velleman.eu/products/view/?id=432308

For about 150 EUR he had bought a DMM sized digital switchmode "lab" power supply.
I'm not sure what to think of it. It looks useful. Especially for those in need of a power supply in the field. (his specialty)
But I'm note sure about the maximum common mode (no earth) and the power quality.

The brand is not top of the line. But they make/resell some stuff for budget market of reasonable good quality. No issues there.

Did anyone do a teardown of this yet? :-/O

Interesting format BUT I would spend the money on a good used PSU, I bought a good used HP 6632A for that sort of money. Still going strong (but bit noisy)
PS It needs mains supply doesn't it? Any good in the field really?
Whoah! Watch where that landed we might need it later.

You can't really take a HP 6632A with you in your toolbox on a plane.

Been looking to get a hold of the small portable "hand type" from Matsusada for quite some time, but this Velleman one looks very nice indeed.

Someone please get a hold of this Velleman and do a proper review and characterization. The specifications listed are very lacking.

No ground, so everything is floating at 120V of noise? No thanks, that's not how lab power supplies work.

Field operable supply should be operable at battery.
And btw: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321719031574 (about 9 $).
(and much noise on switching frequency...)

It doesn't have a grounded plug, where would it get ground from? It's still isolated (would be a death trap if it wasn't).

When I click on that velleman link it always takes me to the locale selection page, once I select a locale it just takes me to the homepage. Any chance you could list the model number so I can see what you are talking about?

There was a thread on this tekpower DMM sized power supply a couple of weeks ago. It looked interesting if you need that sort of thing.

Thanks. That looks almost identical to the tekpower TP3016M from the thread I linked in my previous post.

Would be more interesting/useful if it had an internal rechargeable battery.

I was waiting for this. They always rebrand stuff.

You are correct it does not have ground. It has a C8 socket without earth. I was able to perform 250V megger on it, which was >2.5Gohm. Should be fine, until the transients...
Yes it is floating. Almost all lab supplies are floating, only some have an additional earth plug on the front.

This is very cool, will need to get one (travelling a lot). At the Tekpower price of course though, local distributor sells the Velleman-branded one for 200€  :scared:

Hmm there's a difference in the specs...
Velleman says 0.3-30V 0-3.75A, max 50W
Tekpower says 0.3-12V 0-3.75A, 0.3-30V 0-1.6A

While 1.6A@30V is 48W the Tekpower spec could be interpreted as there being a "step" i.e. above 12V there's a current limit to 1.6A rather than a power limit at 50W... Can someone confirm the limit is really on the power on both versions?

EDIT: More important it seems it's not universal input, the Tekpower being 110V only and the Velleman 220V only. Wouldn't be surprised they both have respective exclusivity on their region's model, Tekpower being apparently a US brand, not the OEM...  :scared:
EDIT2: One more brand in each zone, so no exclusivity...

Hi,

I have the "CSI 2002H" model. I bought it to use it as power supply for small projects which don't require precise voltage/current control (flashing leds for bicycle dynamos, led panels, ...) and it does its job.

I like the fact that you can limit the current before enabling the output. It sounds silly, but I saw cheap bench power supplies which don't display it before enabling the output.

The problem that I found is that if you enable the usb port while using the general output, the voltage switches to 5 volts, it enables the usb supply, but doesn't disable the the general output, so you can fry whatever is connected in case it doesn't tolerate 5 volts. So, it is fine if you care about not to enable the usb port while using the general output.

I did end up buying one actually, but not the smallest "hand type" model. I got one which is about twice as deep (long). It seems to have a problem though, unfortunately. I measure 2 V p-p ripple on CV mode, far less (150 mV p-p iirc?) on CC mode. Just have keep an eye out on ebay.
