TDS 540 Power supply caps?
« on: July 22, 2018, 05:33:19 pm »
Hello all,,, I picked up a TDS 540 for 85 bucks and it had 3 errors on the self test. I took it apart and washed the boards and did not see any damage on the PCB's. tested again and booted with out errors and I then replaced all the caps and it's working just fine.

My question is,, Should I go through the power supply and replace the rest of the caps? I haven't seen much about doing that.

Thanks for you time!!

Leave the PSU as it is. Only the surface mount electrolytic capacitors on the CPU board, acquisition board, RS232 board and front panel are problematic. Note that a few electrolytics on the front panel have a higher voltage on them than the capacitor is rated for (see the TDS520B component service manual).
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

This might give you some ideas ;) SMPS from a TDS420 being rebuilt.
