Title: DSO screen burn-in worries?
Post by: MikeK on August 04, 2022, 07:34:34 pm
Should I be concerned with how much I leave my DSO on?  Although it's the older Rigol DS1052E it has only gotten occassional hobby use.  And I did the fan mod so it's very quiet.

But lately I've started to leave it on for hours during a project work session and wondered about screen damage.  Any concern?

No. LCDs/TFTs don't burn.

They do, but usually very very slowly.

Total non-issue. While it is possible to get forms of image retention with LCD screens, you would have to leave it on 24 hours a day for several years before it's even something to think about. The backlight will most likely wear out before the display panel itself has any problems.

The backlight will most likely wear out before the display panel itself has any problems.

And the brighter they burn, the faster they'll die. I no longer run the backlight at 100% on anything. I've had to replace a number of LEDS over the years. Especially in monitors and televisions. After I started running a max of about 90% brightness, I've had no more failures.

Your mileage may vary!   :)

It's self-defeating to run them at 100%. After a while they'll burn at 90% brightness anyway... then 80%... then 70%.

Much better to run them at 80%-90% and they'll maintain that same brightness much longer.

I'm not sure how I determine what my backlight is running at, but I have the Display->Intensity setting at 50% and the Display->Brightness setting at 31%.
