Bench DMM that can measure 1000Vac?
« on: April 15, 2020, 02:59:54 pm »
I picked up a Clarke-Hess calibrator it can output up to 1000Vac. All of my bench DMM's are limited to 750Vac. It seems most of the common DMM's are limited to 750Vac.

I recall years ago doing a transformer excitation test and the voltage was in that neighborhood, I thought well it's a Fluke there should be some overhead. The over-voltage protection kicked in shortly after, a barely audible click and the meter was done. I don't want to repeat that mistake.

Anyone have a bench DMM that measures up to 1000Vac?

Yup. An old Fuke 8600A. Top range is 1200V, AC or DC. 4.5 digits, quite the instrument in its (long ago) days. :-)

289 is not considered a bench meter by most people.

My vintage Fluke 8000A was rated at 1200Vrms sinusoidal on AC, measuring up to 1199V.  While it is capable of it, I never used it on anything above main voltage, nor do I have any source that generate above main voltage.

You could have buy or make an high voltage probe / divider   at 1kv ac  youre slightly playing with fire ??

You have some 3 - 6 kv probe for a mere 60$ usb on Ebay ?? sometime less ?

Having said that, despite it is not officially a bench meter, the 289 is as capable, or more capable than many low end bench meters.  So your recommendation is sound, just that it is not technically a meter plugged into the outlet and can stay on indefinitely.

However, if I have to come close to 1kV AC, I would take a professional handheld Fluke over any bench meters.

Not a DMM, but an AVO Model 8 could do it!
The early ones went to 2.5kV, & the later ones to 3kV, if I remember correctly.

It is important to note that the frequency of the AC will have a huge impact at high voltages.
Measuring 1kV at 60 Hz is a lot easier than at 10 MHz...

Yep, my AVO 8 Mk5 does 3kV for AC and DC.

Absolutely, the Fluke 8000A stipulates a max of V*Freq < 1E7, which puts the max frequency at 8.3kHz at 1200V.

.....1271, 1281.
Yeah, sacrifice 2000+$ DMMs with about as much unobtainium inside as possible to the lighting gods until the magic smoke comes out ;D
HP 3456A does it as well, until the AC divider hybrid releases the magic smoke.
How do I know? From experience ;D , but at least it's not 2k$ and somewhat repairable...
