Elektro-Automatik EA-3048B Power Supply Teardown

armandas:
As the title says, this is a teardown of the EA-3048B power supply. There is not much info on the internet about these, so I thought I'd share some pictures and comments.

This is a so-called "universal" power supply. It has two outputs: DC and AC. The DC is not regulated, so you either get rectified or smoothed (using a 4700uF cap) output.

Not much else to say, I guess, so let's look at what's inside.

Front view.

Overview of the insides.

The voltage is controlled using a variable transformer (variac).

Display board.

Binding posts.

Made in China..

There are some more pictures in the album.

These PSUs are sold by Farnell.

Thanks,  nice tear down and clear photos.  What does one use variable VAC at these voltages for?  The DC output appears to be just full wave bridge rectification with a smoothing capacitor?

In the description, it says that these supplies are good for school labs and such, so I assume this supply can be used to safely reduce mains voltage (instead of using a transformer).

You are right about the DC output. The smoothing capacitor can be switched on and off.
Frangible:
A nice old school unregulated DC power supply.  Good for testing regulators and for electro-chemical experiments!

Looks like the build quality is very good.   8)
