check siglent oscilloscope history using serial number

hello how can I check online if a siglent oscilloscope is stolen, or more history about it like warranty, returns, refurbished, repairs, etc using the serial number? I'm negotiating an oscilloscope with a seller, he sent me the serial number photo.

If manufacturer or distributor indeed had that record, I'm not sure they would feel at liberty to share it with you -- you're not a party to those contracts of sale or maintenance. I'm afraid you have to establish your own trust in the seller or the online platform, if it offers any guarantees at all, on a private sale. You should be satisfied that the price is set fair taking all that into account.

This is a private negotiation, it is a used scope. I was able to check the warranty status and surprise, the seller is lying 🤥. it would be nice if I was able to check if this scope is stolen... maybe tautech could help on this? I can send the serial number in private message. I much appreciated.

This seems like sensitive info. Why would the manufacturer store and share such info with a person besides the true owner, which should know that stuff?

Not necessarily. The warranty status they show is based on manufacture date. And if device is within warranty according to that, they may accept it without any proof of sale (depends on manufacturer). However if you have a proof of sale, they should base their warranty period on actual sale date. Unless it's something ridiculous like sale happened 5+ years after production in which case manufacturer may refuse to honor that.

It is unlikely a manufacturer would know whether or not a scope was stolen - when equipment is stolen one reports it to the police/insurance, not to the manufacturers, at least unless it is a very expensive piece of gear with a leasing/support contract or something like that.

So they would only know who they have sold it originally to and/or who has contacted them for eventual service afterwards. They would have no information about an eventual further sale/decommissioning (or theft) beyond that point. However, even that is not an information they would be able to share with you, for both business and legal reasons.   

If you have doubts about the scope, walk away. It is that simple. It is not like a Siglent scope is some rare unobtanium piece of gear worth the risk.

They wouldn't even necessarily know who it was sold to originally (other than perhaps a distributor), unless you bought it directly from them. Otherwise it would require warranty registration or some other contact by the buyer to make any connection back to a buyer. Then if it changed hands even once after that, it's even more likely the manufacturer would have no idea who the last legitimate owner was.

Yeah that's enough for me to step out of the sale. So i quit. I don't like liars when doing business. Money in my pocket
