for its $50 AUD price I was expecting it to be a device that plugged into phone for a LCD screen

What do you expect for this money? What do you need?
I think it's better than nothing, but it's not really good at anything except being cheap.
There are Youtube videos and spec sheets.  Just see if it makes sense for you.
