faulty RIGOL DG811?
« on: March 23, 2020, 06:36:08 pm »
Hello,

I have just received a Rigol DG811 function generator from Batronix.
It looks very good and it produces the waveforms as expected.

However I suspect it is faulty at the USB (type A) port.
Before contacting Batronix/Rigol for support and asking for a replacement, I'd like to be sure
there is really something going on, or it is a known problem.

So, I have tried with 3 different usb flash drives: two are small 2Gb (random brand) and another is a 64Gb from Kingston. I have formatted them using Win8.1, either using FAT or exFAT or FAT32.

When I insert the USB drive in the USB(type A) port of the DG811, nothing happens.
In fact, something has happened once (not the first, nor the last attempt). The USB drive was recognised, I managed to save a PNG file. I then extracted the drive, inserted it again, and it does not recognise it anymore.

Something is weird. If I do:

1) I format the USB drive with Win8.1 (example: FAT32, allocation unit size=4096bytes),
2) Exject it properly,
3) Insert into the Rigol 811,
4) Nothing happens (but the little light in the USB drive shows stable led on)
5) I re-insert the USB drive into windows,
6) Windows says: "there is a problem with this drive. Scan the drive now and fix it".

The firmware is: 00.01.09.00.00

Can anybody help?

Thanks!

Thank you for the answer tv84.

I tried (using the default Disks GUI-utility of Ubuntu) to format the USB drive using FAT, but nothing changed.

I have produced a short (2min) video to show what is going on:

Thanks again!

EDIT: same problem even if I format with Linux file sytstem.
And despite many attempts, I cannot reproduce the situation when the DG811 recognised the USB drive.

3) Insert into the Rigol 811,
4) Nothing happens (but the little light in the USB drive shows stable led on)
5) I re-insert the USB drive into windows,
6) Windows says: "there is a problem with this drive. Scan the drive now and fix it".

This part is normal as rigol does not close the drive properly, so that would mean the instrument is accessing it and writing something to it.
Why its not detected by the gen though I'm not sure...

When you insert a drive the "USB" symbol does not appear on the display right?
See if you can find another drive or try a sd card + USB adapter. FAT32 only.

Hello thm_w,

and thanks for the valuable idea of trying a sd card + USB adapter!
I did that, with a cheap USD adapter and a 16Gb card, formatted FAT32.

The DG811 immediately reacted, when I inserted it, with "Waiting...." for like 5-10 seconds.
Then the USB was recognised and I could take the following screenshot:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ku1sckdcbci0ojq/RIGOL0.PNG?dl=0

Weirdly enough, the file is dated 1 Jan 2000...  :-//

Anyway, I then removed the usb-adapter, tried to insert it again aaaand... nothing.
Again as before, not recognised.
And, as before, after booting the USB icon is displayed for a few seconds (when the USB drive is inserted) and then it disappears.

It looks like every time I insert a new USB drive device, the DG811 saves its serial number or something (the "Waiting..." phase) and then it rejects it.

Any idea?

Thanks

@tv84,

yes, as shown in the video above, if displays a USB icon for 3-4 seconds which then disappeared.

I have contacted Batronix, and they contacted Rigol.
They acknowledged that it is a faulty unit and will substitute it for free.

Can't wait to receive my working unit, because it's a nice AWG! :)

Thanks for your help!
