Title: Finding the age of a Tek DMM4040 \ Fluke 8845A multimeter?
Post by: killingtime on March 08, 2021, 05:09:52 pm
Hi,

Does anyone know if it's possible to have a Tek DMM4040 \ Fluke 8845A multimeter (they're the same AFAIK) show the number of hours powered on?

I don't see this facility in the user manual.

From what I've read, these meters can be manufactured many years before they're bought and pushed into service. Going from the manufacturing date can be misleading.

I'm speaking with a seller who has a 'new' 4040, but it has no warranty.....left on a shelf apparently. They're not an official reseller. I spoke with Tek and they said provided the meter was new, buying it from a 3rd party would not be a barrier to a warranty, which is what I'm after.

The only way to tell if it is 'new' is to see if it's been left switched on  and for how long, but I don't know how you'd figure that out.

Thanks.

I bought one like that (8846A) but I didn't even consider the warranty, I just assumed there wouldn't be one because it was not an authorized seller.  I'd be amazed if Tek honored a warranty on a years-old product from a 3rd party seller.  I suppose if you register it and have a receipt, they might consider it legit.

There's no power-on hours feature AFAIK.  How old is it?  They've been out for well over a decade and even the latest firmware 400mA models can be almost 10 years old.  As long as you are getting a very good deal, the only real concerns I would have would be that the display is not worn (burned) and that there has been no physical abuse, like dropping.
