Fluke 8X Safety Issue Recall!
« on: February 14, 2022, 02:10:43 pm »
It seems one or more batches of Fluke 83V, 87V, and 88V multimeters have a safety issue. As far as I can see, it affects the 4-mm jack not making proper contact in some cases.

English:
https://www.fluke.com/en-us/support/safety-notices/8x-v-safety-notice

Swedish website with more models affected:
https://www.fluke.com/sv-se/support/sakerhetsmeddelanden/8x-v-safety-notice

Swedish "National Electrical Safety Board" notice: "Stopped sales and recall of affected units"
https://www.elsakerhetsverket.se/privatpersoner/dina-elprodukter/forsaljningsforbud/fluke-aterkallar-multimeter/

I archived the video on Youtube in cased Fluke removes the links in the future:

When was that posted?

Looks like they knew there was a production problem but decided to ship anyway after a bit of a manual bodge to try and fix it:

A colleague at work was notified today about this, so I am not sure how many know about it.

The Swedish "National Electrical Safety Board" says that Fluke on their own initiative called for the recall on "2021-12-13".

Why word this in a way that suggests that their fix may not be adequate?

And as for shipping “anyway”… uhhh… what would you have them do? Scrap them, even though they can be reworked?

They're now recalling them because it wasn't adequate.

:palm: Um, no. The sticker indicates units where the fix has already been performed. Nowhere does it state that the fixes were inadequate!

Interesting.  I wonder if that 87V I bought to test is bad.

One year older.  Tried the test anyway and it appears fine.

During a Fluke parts hunt and hitting on Fluke's' Safety Notice page link and spotting this post,
I was wishful thinking I'll either get my 87V replaced
or at the least fixed and maybe a free Calibration if it's affected

Unfortunately (?!) my 87V passed the test, the serial number is miles away at 1xxxxxxx, and meter has been flawless from day 1.

Anyways it's good to know in case I come across a used/abused cheapie,
bring along the stiff spaghetti stock Fluke leads* (everyones favorite..?) and do the test.

*Apparently these are the leads that highlight the issue

Hey thanks for the heads up, I didn't realized this recall... Well mine is on the 33xxxxxx, so outside of the range.

I knew about this issue quite sometime ago. Our plant has several 87V and none is affected.

I reckon it pays to do the test anyway, you never know if you got a meter that was made on Monday morning or Friday afternoon

or some peaved employee on the assembly lined walked, or soldering skills questionable,

or maybe the nice 'always worked' leads you have faith in are knackered with breaks, broken strands, cold solder or suss spot welds etc

i.e. test gear needs to be tested, especially if dangerous or hidden voltages are present and you are working alone.

Pet cats, dogs and birds may see you keel over and sympathise,
but can't bail you out or phone paramedics if you get uber zapped into tech/DIY oblivion!

Just sayin..  \$\Omega\$
