Fluke 233 or cheaper Alternatives
« on: December 14, 2024, 10:30:26 pm »
Hi,

I am in a situation in the test field where I would have to measure a voltage a little further away from the source, but at the source I can only set the voltage there, i.e. no remote control is possible.
The distance is just under 10m, so it's right at the limit of the Fluke 233.
What are the experiences with the Fluke, does the remote transmission work reliably, is it prone to interference?
And:
Are there any cheaper alternatives to the Fluke?
I know that there are Bluetooth devices, but I think that they will have problems with the distance.

As always, thanks for any response/idea/recommendation.

Martin

Bluetooth dmm and two phones with AnyDesk you could be on the other side of the planet. But first try with with one phone, maybe is sufficient to cover your needs.
Later added:
I played a bit with my clamp meter Owon CM2100B that has Bluetooth connection. In my home I was able to stay in contact with the meter even I was in a different room and with door closed. The Bluetooth issues that you mentioned can be related to a noisy RF environment and with a particular device.  To further increase the distance you can use a tablet with bigger screen. With my 6" screen phone I was able to readout the numbers from 4 meters away. Another feature that Owon app has that can help you is the "Voice Broadcast" that will read in English the numbers.  Of course this is useful only in quiet area, if are noisy equipment nearby this feature will not help you.

You may also use a regular multimeter with two phone and video calls app.

I used the 233 at work (I no longer work there so I can't test it any more) but never used it at 10m. Didn't have problem when the meter is inside a steel cabinet.

Update:
We have been using the Fluke 233 for two weeks and it does exactly what I had in mind.
It doesn't quite make the 10m, but for what I wanted it for, it serves its purpose.
