Fluke 287/289 Lithium Mod - No More Batteries in the Trash!

<< < (4/5) > >>

BeBuLamar:
I would not buy a 289 with rechargeable battery. For my kind of work I have no time to charge the battery. Replacing the batteries is much faster. The cost of the batteries is unimportant.

Ingineer:
Yeah, that's why I purchased 2 of the 5Ah packs.  I leave one charged at 8v as a ready-spare.   Given that these (even charged to only 8v) will last longer than even the Energizer Lithiums, and the swap is actually a little faster, I posit that having this mod reduces the amount of time you have to spend fiddling with batteries.   The whole point was to not have to have batteries go dead at a inopportune time like they had been with NiMh.

czullo:
And what do you thing, about this one:

coromonadalix:
well i would try to buy a battery door or do a 3D version of it

and do hard mod  like adding a bms and sums up to 3 cells or more with an ldo regulator on the output to drop at 9vdc,

since normally the battery 6x cells sums up to 9 vdc ...

ive seen some hacks like this, some with pouch cells (witch i hate),  everything is put in the battery door and does keep the meter original

some even did with small drill packs you could swap ....

BeBuLamar  has a good point,  waiting for charged pack is cumbersome,  unless you have 2x or more

Ingineer:
My goal was to turn this into a workhorse.  Yeah, the pouch cells are cheap enough you can have one or 2 spares ready.  I chose to mod my existing door and just order another to keep it reversible.  ($50 is cheaper than trying to 3D print something)

LDO is not needed on 2 cells, as the meter has internal regulation.  Why add complexity, or do something that will hamper usability, such as making the meter large, heavy and/or bulbous?

Clearly Fluke doesn't give much consideration to the aftermarket, they are never going to release an accessory for an older product.  My largest complaint about this meter is it has too long of a "boot" time, and the display still isn't as readable as some of my older flukes, but I love the features and accuracy, so I still reach for it most of the time.
