Hello,

My Tektronix 2213 60MHz Oscilloscope started having issues a while ago and I'm just getting around to trouble shooting it. It was working fine for 6 or 7 months after its purchase on eBay and then one day I turned it on and it was functioning properly and then all of the sudden the CRT went dead, and the thing started hissing really loudly. The hiss is like around a 2000hz tone and it doesn't fluctuate. After about a second of it being turned on, just before the hissing, the trigger light flashes and then goes off. I'm not sure what happened, and I was wondering if anyone had experiences like mine and could help me out.

Thanks,
Evan K0EVN

Update:

I opened up the chassis again and the hissing seems to be coming from the high voltage area shielded with a metal panel and a bunch of warning stickers. I have a lot of experience with high voltage electronics and tube equipment but I'm only 14 and I'm still afraid. I'll discharge the electrolytics, but if there's anything else I need to know if before I of in, that'd be appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd start by replacing the capacitors on the output side of the PSU, and checking out the service bulletins posted above.

I have some info in my video with cross references etc to modern parts that might prove useful.

There's also a thread running on these sorts of scopes that might help too.

Where does all this test equipment keep coming from?!?

Check ALL supply voltages with a DMM and ripple with a scope.

I'm confident it's one of the high voltage cap in the high voltage stage. I had a very similar issue with the same symptoms.
One of the cap went bad and made a short, the result was a nice little arc.. you can see it in the dark.

Also if you still there measure the none HV supply rails too, then adjust it based on the recommendation of the service manual.
Don't ask. I'm the same guy who gave you ultra fast internet in the '00s..
