Title: Fluke 8010A Voltage Regulator Issues?
Post by: VintageTech on December 05, 2014, 11:27:01 pm
I recently got a Fluke 8010 multimeter from a friend who no longer needed it. When I went to power it up, nothing happened. As I checked the supply voltages (thou shall check voltages), I realized that the voltage was around 1.25 volts and proceeded to do some head scratching. Then, the strangest thing happened. It started to work. The AC range was causing the screen to fade out. Possibly caused by a few bad caps. But other than that it was working, About 5-10 minutes later, it shut down and would not restart. As I checked the main regulator, I was shocked to find that It was well above nominal temperatures. My thoughts are that the regulator went into thermal shutdown mode and did not recover, thus causing the meter to shut off.  Also keep in mind that I could have killed it. I managed to screw up another Fluke that was given to me. Simply by attempting to repair some solider joints that had failed after 20 years of being beaten by travel and use in an industrial environment.

I guess I'll leave you with two questions:

What else should I look for?

Will I still be able to have it calibrated If I try to replace the regulator?

Update:

Upon more troubleshooting, I concluded that there was a short in the batteries. I removed the batteries to discover that the unit is entirely functional. Repair: Success
