Fluke 8400 and 8842A DMM
« on: April 09, 2016, 11:28:45 pm »
A friend has one of each for sale, cheap, less than $50 ea. All he knows is they turn on. Any thoughts on either. It would be a bench unit. Currently using a HP 3478A and a Fluke 8050A. The 8050A is primarily for the diode test function and HV so it wouldn't go away.

The 8400A is very old/large/heavy, but a nice meter if you like Nixies.  AC and ohms are option boards, so may not be included.  I'd say $50 is on the high side.

The 8842A is similar to your HP 3478A, but has a nice readable VFD in place of the 3478A's crappy LCD.  $50 is a great deal if it's working.

If the display on the 8842a is still somewhat bright and it passes all the self tests, that's not a bad price.

I have an 8842a that I paid $7 for that is a nice unit with a bright VFD.

He had 4. One had a 1/2 bright display. All 4 checked as operational. I picked the prettiest one that had intact calibration stickers.   :-//
