Title: Fluke 867 vs 867B... anyone know the difference?
Post by: windsmurf on May 04, 2019, 05:04:12 am
Hello I just obtained a Fluke 867, and wanted to dig into all of its functions with a manual... but I can't seem to find one online.  I looked at the 867B manual and it does look identical.  Also online pictures of the 867B screen seem to show a newer, more contrasty screen compared to my 867.  Is the only difference the screen?  Can I place an 867B screen into an 867 to get the better contrast?

Any info greatly appreciated!

I have 2 867B meters. I know they made a 863 as well, but have not heard of just an 867. The contrast can be adjusted in the setup function. If you need manuals, they should be available on line. If not i have a complete set i can send you.

Maybe its just a different backlight in the 867 vs 867B hence "B"?  Perhaps that's the thing that makes it look like mine is less contrasty compared to the 867B.
I did download the 867B/863 Manual, and that has helped with its functionality. Thank you for offering though!
The 867's backlight looks quite different from an 867B pictures I see online.  Here's mine:

I ordered the $50 refurb screen for the 867B to install into my867.
I had to trim some plastic on one side of the case to fit the 867B screen.

It works!  But I found out 2 things:
The 867B requires some backlight at all times for the screen to be visible.  So I believe the firmware on the 867B always runs with a lower backlight setting, and when the backlight button is pressed, the backlight gets brighter.   On the 867, backlight is off completely until you hit the backlight button (see previous post).

Below are pics of my 867 with the 867B LCD/backlight installed, with backlight on, then backlight off.  Looks great with the backlight.  Its pretty much unreadable with the backlight off.

Too expensive to build.  Its a great meter for a hobbyist I think, especially now at more reasonable used prices.
They were superceded by a more multimeter-like 289, and more scope like 123.

Interesting to note that the Fluke 865/867 that came before the 863/867B were made in USA.  The latter were outsourced to Holland.

My 867B was made in USA. Later serial numbers appear to be made in Holland.
