Title: Fluke 8840A multimeter stuck in self test mode
Post by: GreyWoolfe on October 21, 2013, 02:35:00 am
I pulled a boneheaded move.  I accidentally put my 8840A into self test mode.  It has been running for hours.  I checked the manual and there doesn't appear any way to stop it.  Does anyone have any experience with this meter and knows a way to stop the self test?

Have you tried power cycling it yet?

I assume by self test mode, that you mean the extended test mode which you get to by holding down the SRQ button.
The self test mode goes through all tests once and then goes back to normal operating mode.  It should show each test number (1 to 22) as it does it and report any errors.  If you don't have the AC option, then a couple of the tests will be skipped.  If your meter is stuck in self test, then something has gone wrong.  I've no idea what.  I've worked on a few 8840A and 8842A units but haven't run into that behavior.

I have tried power cycling it and leaving it unplugged for a couple of hours.  It goes right back to the self test.  It is not listing the test number as it is doing it.  Right now it is running the mA AC test.  OK, now this is interesting.  I was just looking at the manual and it said that if the meter was switched to the rear inputs, some tests would be eliminated.  I pressed the switch and saw an error 31.  I power cycled the meter and it is now out of self test mode and working normally.  Thanks for the replies.
