Frist Frequency counter, how about this one?
« on: June 14, 2018, 12:06:00 am »
Hey guys, Im looking to buy my first frequency counter. I dont know what Im supposed to be looking in one.
I have a few frequency generators here (nothing high end).
After some research I did find this one: https://produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB-1046356524-frequencimetro-advantest-150mhz-usado-com-garantia-_JM

It is an advantest Universal Counter. It is used and it seems to be in good shape. THe store selling it is actually a specialized store that mainly deals with measurement equipment, they also offer a 6 month guarantee.

As I live in Brazil it is relatively hard to find good stuff for a decent price. Importing taxes are super high and what you guys find on ebay for 100 dollars here in Brazil to get someone of the same quality used would be somewhere around 250.

The price of the is in Brazilian Reals so the convertion is: for every dollar you can buy around 3.6 Reais

If you could give me some light as to what Im supposed to be looking in a frequency counter and if anyone knows anything about this advantes it would be great.

thank you

I read the datasheet and the Advantest TR5821 is very comparable to the HP5315A/B and HP5316A/B; it is a reciprocal counter with 100ns internal timing resolution producing 7 digits per second.

I do not know why you think that you need a universal counter but this is a fine choice for general purpose work.

Hey David, thanks for replying. I did not know universal counters were different than frequency counters. I will do my research about them

A frequency counter just measures frequency and maybe period and width using one channel.  A universal counter can also make two channel measurements like time interval and ratio.
