Good "budget" programmable bench power supply
« on: August 09, 2023, 12:09:20 am »
I want to get good 30V 5A programmable DC power supply and was looking at Sigilent SPD1305X and Rigol DP711. These two have low noise and are linear which is very good since i deal with solid state radios. Which one would you reccomend in this price range?

Knowing the Siglent PSU's quite well I would spend a little more for the 3ch SPD3303X-E and use it in Parallel channel mode for its 6A capability and in Serial mode for 60V capability.
Should you need more, several units can be placed in series for elevated voltages.

We do sell the odd 1305X but many more SPD3303X-E.
Then there are the hacks......

Thanks. Now i dont need extra channels. But in the other hand, it is not much more expensive so i might choose that one. I also heard that 3ch one is better built quality and has better IC inside. Is that true?

A cheaper option is this one: Manson at 200€

It comes with its own proprietary software so you need to check that the software can do what you want it to do.

That's a SMPS though. May still work fine for OPs needs and they are cheaper than linears if he can tolerate the noise. But for my only or primary PS I'd recommend saving a bit more pesos and get something like the 3303X-E mentioned above. I have a 30v/10a switcher as a tertiary supply that I use to power DC devices with, but for circuit development and troubleshooting work I prefer linears.

The main benefit of having at least two channels is that you can configure the PSU to deliver both positive and negative rails. In my digital realm, it's rarely needed. But when I do venture into analog territory, it's often a requirement (or at least very, very handy).
