I just got an Agilent GPIB or HP-IB USB adapter that works great on my Agilent signal generator (at least to send commands). However, when I plug it into my HP 8595E spectrum analyzer, the Keysight Connection Expert does not seem to recognize the instrument. It sees the HP-IB address (18) but shows no connection.
Is there different software or a different procedure to use here? I thought that GPIB or HP-IB was the same for all instruments, old or newish.

GPIB/HPIB is 2 names for the same "electrical interface"
That said , the instrument commands are different for many instrument types (classes) , and expecially if it's pre SCPI.
It might be that the sw doesn't support the SA , have you verified that it does ??

The old HP SA have no SCPI support.
Take a look here, this is may be what you are looking for

The KE5FX GPIB Toolkit is a collection of free Windows utilities that will help you make and record research-quality measurements with GPIB-based electronic test equipment.
This is version 1.971 of the Toolkit, released October 28, 2016.

Manual sending *IDN? should work.
Haven't connected my 8594E at the moment so I can't verify it.

Manual sending *IDN? should work.
*IDN? is a SCPI command, NOT working on most of the older HP gear.
Most likely the HP Spectrum Analyzer will not respond at all.

The command is "ID". It will return the model number:
HP8595E

You are right, according to the programming manual sending ID? should return the model number.

Thanks very much for the information!
I looked again, and it seems that the Keysight Connection Expert does see the spectrum analyzer. I have downloaded the GPIB tools and will try them out.
Happy New Year!
