hackable scope choice : Rigol MSO5074 or SDS2000X+ or ?
« on: August 15, 2020, 07:26:56 am »
Hi folks,
I am in the need of a couple of scopes in the next months.
Only analog stuff. 300 MHz at least. low signal in the mV range most of the time.
AWG is needed, basic spectrum analyzer is a plus.
I am not fighting to save a few hundreds bucks.
What do you guys suggest ?
cheers

Hello,

The SDS2000X+ seems to have a much lower frontend noise so it will be a much better choice for your needs.

What kind of analog stuff at 300MHz+ in mV range??

Maybe you need SA?

I typically look at charge sensitive preamplifier or transimpedance amplifier outputs. typical analog bandwidth is 50-100 MHz. Also usual [20Hz; 20 Mhz] integrated noise is in the 0.5 mV RMS ballpark.
I already have reasonnable spectrum analyzers.

thx for the tip. I did not know that.

Thanks.
In that case 2000x+ is much better.. it also have 10 bit mode that is 100 MHz limited. Noise is respectably low too.

The SDS2000X+ has a pretty good front-end. Noise is specified to be below 80uV RMS and in 10 bit mode the resolution is down to ~33uV/bit. Even though the sampling rate is only 2GS/s the scope can dither the sample time for a much higher equivalent sample rate making the 500MHz max bandwidth quite usable.

Though be aware, that the AWG is a bit basic...

I don't regret choosing the Siglent over the Rigol  ;D
