Title: Hacked DS1054z and firmware updates?
Post by: Fleetz on August 07, 2018, 01:36:59 am
If a DS1054Z has had the 100MHz hack applied and Rigol subsequently issue a firmware update on the unit are you able apply that offical Rigol update without any issue?

Remember to warm up the scope and run the self-calibration after a firmware update (whether or not you've unlocked features).

I completed the upgrade today using member janekivi modified 00:04:04:03:05 firmware which correct the pluses to pulses text error on the display. Thank you janekivi....

I upgraded from 00:04:02:SP3 which I believe was the firmware it shipped with back in 2014, I think 6 revision on. Many improvements and enhancements. It blows me away what this scope can do for the money.

Yes the scope ran for a good 30 minutes before hitting “self cal”, probably took just over 20 minutes to complete. All works a treat.

Thanks for all your support to my questions...

I will probably wait till it hits the North America site to download.

Looks like it is related to this thread:

Attention to detail. Recurring theme. :horse: :-DD

But, I appreciate that they're still fixing new things that get reported.

About the last firmware version "00.04.04.04.03" (https://www.rigolna.com/firmware/ (https://www.rigolna.com/firmware/)).

After this update, is the Rigol DS1054Z still hackable?

Any change to some future firmware update fixes the "hackability"?

Thank you all.

There's no ongoing battle between hackers and Rigol.

Rigol is not trying to "fix" the hackability.

I bought DS1054Z from a Rigol agent. And DS1054Z has been hacked by the agent before they shipped it to me. I think Rigol would not fix the "hackable" bug. Only personal users will hack their scope becasue personal users are very sensible for the price.

Where? In China? And from some official agent/reseller?

How was it hacked? What did they do to it?

As far as the Rigol DS1054Z goes, the only 'hacks' I know of involve generating the codes that Rigol would have sent you if you had paid for them.

All features (serial decoding, advanced triggers, large memory) have been officially factory-enabled on all DS1054Z shipped during the past year or two. Only the 100 MHz "upgrade" is not officially available.

Did your DS1054Z have the higher bandwidth enabled, or just the other features?

From my DS1054Z that I bought in December 2019 (from a larger official dealer for measurement technology here in the country)
all options were enabled, but of course not the 100 MHz.

All other options are officially preinstalled or activated on the dealer's website.
Since the original box was not opened, I can only assume that Rigol had already delivered it to this dealer "so".

Since Rigol also sells a DS1104Z and this is more expensive, I cannot imagine that this option can ever be made legal by a dealer.

Well, Rigol does sell official bandwidth upgrades for other scope series, e.g. the MSO5000. Any combination from 70/100/200 MHz to 100/200/350 MHz is offered. Of course they will cost you, a bit more that the price difference between the respective models; you can check the pricing structure e.g. at batronix.com.

But for whatever marketing reasons, Rigol have so far decided against this for the DS1000Z series.

Had a chance while ago to verify bandwidth on DS1054Z vs DS1104Z.

The 1054Z with 100MHz hack, performed exactly as the DS1104Z on the rise time, verified with fast pulse generator with flat top.

Too bad I probably forgot to document it, as it was a loaner unit with only very short time on my bench.
