It will depends what do you need it for. I have both, the UT61E and the UT139C (not the "E") and, if those were my only two choices,  I would get the UT139E. I use them for basic electronics stuff only and it is fine for me.

But you should listen to member joesqmith as he is definitely more qualified than me in this matter. He has a YT channel where the meters are thoroughly tested (abused?). He is not a big fan of Unit meters and he makes his point why in his videos, I would recommend you to watch it if you haven't yet.

Many Uni-T meters have been tested here: https://lygte-info.dk/info/indexDMMReviews%20UK.html

Hello,

I don't know the ut-139, but I have a ut-61e and appreciate :

(A) its usb link (cable around at 10eur on ebay) and its measures 2 time per second,
(B) the peak-extremum is a very fast measure, perhaps about 1e-5sec, and does not record the extremum from the display,
I get about a peak-max at 10A or 12A when I charge/discharge a large (2200µF) capacitor,
(C) the battery is a simple 6F22 for a very long time, I believe I didn't change it. It isnot a lithium battery impossible to change,
(D) I prefer a 22000 pts DMM to a 6000 pts,
(E) One day a short on main power 220V / 30A fires the fuse but doesn't destroy the multimeter,
(F) ut-61e seems cheaper than ut-139...

It's my advice, feel free to have an other !
Have a nice day !

F.

Hi

Please give us more information about your requirements. Without this, it is difficult to give you sensible advice.

Generally speaking
UT61E is fantastic value for money if you are looking  for a dmm with good resolution (22,000 count and 4.5 digit)
Down side is that is does not have safe input protection, will not give you good protection from energy  pulses on mains.

UT139 is a good general purpose dmm. Has adaquate input protection, will be ok with energy pulse on mains

It depends on what you need the meter for!

If it's for electronics, breadborad stuff, and ocasionally probing on the mains side of a power supply, I'd probably go for Uni-T 61E and, if possible, the European version or the Tenma 72-10415 which is sold by Farnell and is basically a rebranded UT61E, with seemingly better protection.

Also, for electronics work, the 22000 count display is almost therapeutic to look at. You can measure 5V or 12V with three decimals just to tickle your inner nerd. I know I like it, in spite of the fact I probably don't needed it that bad.

I just bought and, of course, took it apart before even turning it on in proper EEVblog fashion, the Tenma I mentioned above and took some pictures.

Here is a view of the fuses, PTCs, MOVs and the rest of the protection circuitry. I was pleasantly surprised by the beefier HRC fuses and the fact that all protection elements seemed to be in place. I compared this board with several others I've seen on YouTube reviews and it's a bit of a (pleasant) mixture of things. Now, I don't have any surge generators at hand to actually test what it can withstand, I could perhaps through some ESD pulses at it, but since I'm gonna use this only up to 24V or so, I'll leave it alone.

Here is a detail with the marking on the PCB, it's a bit unclear, but it says 61E NEW CE, and if that's a date code, it says 150507-10D... a wild guess makes me think it means 2015 May the 7th... as for 10D, your guess is as good as mine.

Hope this helps!
