Title: "Hey, multimeter"...
Post by: Fungus on August 09, 2021, 03:32:02 am
We haven't had a new Aneng for ages but it was worth the wait. This one's destined to be a classic...

New Aneng multimeter with voice control:

I quite like the form factor.  :)

Aneng really is not scared to innovate with there stuff.(Unlike most Chinese companies)

Not quite sure how useful the voice control functionality is since you typically change modes when you are not holding the probes on something, so your hand is free to touch the meter. This might be more of a use case for oscilloscopes.

But the other things about it are pretty neat. That probe storage compartment looks rather nice, no more winding the probes around the meter. The LED in the corner is also a nice touch, especially for continuity mode in perhaps a loud environment. The screen is nicely huge.

Already have some Aneng meters and they are really good for the price. So i would love to see someone review this one too.

I loathe voice control. I'll admit it is handy to use Alexa as a kitchen timer, it makes it easy to set multiple timers for different things while I'm cooking and have various ingredients on my hands, but that's about the only thing I ever use it for. I've never once wished I could talk to my multimeter.

Does the voice in the video sound horribly clipped to anyone else?  It's a bit odd for a product that's about voice control.

Setting a DMM to the wrong mode can blow it up, eg resistance or capacitance mode when measuring 240V mains.  They will need to be very sure about their false rates for pattern detection.  A review would indeed be enlightening  :-+

99% of the shouting I would be doing: RANGE RANGE RANGE RANGE

I think I'd prefer a meter that shouted the reading at a safe distance.  :D

O: Multimeter, switch to Volt DC

M: I don't understand that

O: MULTIMETER VOLT DC

M: I don't understand that

O: MUL TI ME TER MODE VOLT DC

M: Switching to Mode Current DC

M: Fuse

M: Fuse

M: Fuse

...fully fictional, of course. Sound's like I could have endless fun with it. :-)

I’m not sure if a voice operated multimeter is a good idea as a misunderstanding or a simultaneous conversation in the laboratory could cause it switching from measuring voltage to measuring current

Don't worry, there's no current measurement mode on this one.

Yes.  :-DD

(Maybe that's how loud you need to speak to it to get it to work)

Nahh... It's perfect.  ;D

Maybe the recognition engine was trained with those sound clips... that should prevent some mishap.

Next model will be: hands-free.

They also have the AN999S, that speaks the reading on the display when you press the button on the ground lead, weird!

I doubt that it's worth it! Voiced controlled DMM for $30? I bet it works poorly.

Must ...  resist ...

I already have two Aneng DMMs.

Video sounds like they used the speakers on an AN-888s.

I can see it now, Dave reviewing the voice activate multimeter on his BLOG and in the middle of hooking it up, it says, "What are you doing, Dave?"  Then the video cuts out.  :-DD

Now they just need to label it HAL9000. :-DD

Cheep voice recognition does tend to work pretty badly. I wonder how badly it works with Daves aussie accent on top. Tho it tends to be the scotts that are well known for confusing voice recognition software.

"Multimeter, where is my measurement?"

"The essence of superiority is delegation.  I have therefor delegated the task to a lessor multimeter."

I have often encountered situations where this would be useful.  Having finally gotten probes into place on a hard to reach test point and finding I needed a different range than expected or wanted more than one measurement type on the location.

But my experience with voice control makes me cautious.  In the cases where this would be useful I am in no mood to have long arguments with the DMM.  While I have found some voice control applications that really work well, I have also encountered many that lead you down the rat holes illustrated in earlier posts.  The limited range of commands required to be understood makes me hopeful.  Voice recognition gets easier the smaller the vocabulary is.  The voice recognition on automated telephone systems that only have to recognize "Yes", "No" and the digits from 0 to 9 work very well in my experience.

A good meter would be a merge between a cell phone and a meter module,   Ok Google ...  Ok Siri   loll

Like the Mooshimeter  thing  i saw, With a voice activated AI ???

Cool idea and it might be the way of the future! The current status of voice control though (Alexa anyone?), is in my honest opinion not ready to handle mission critical things like a DMM. But in the future I think we will be giving voice commands to a lot more things than we do today.
