Title: HIOKI DT4211/4212 Multimeter Quality
Post by: chawchip on July 31, 2014, 02:56:56 am
Hello,

HIOKI released a couple of new "budget" meters last year, the DT4211 and DT4212. I have seen an in-depth video review of the DT4252 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z74SU8ybcbk) and was quite impressed with the build quality and speed of this meter, but it is lacking a milliamp range. The new DT4211 and the DT4212 have a proper milliamp range, but I am wondering if the same level of quality is present in the new DT4211 and DT4212. Specifically do they contain genuine HIOKI and TI chipsets (like the DT4252), and are they manufactured in Japan.

Thanks!

My guess from reading the Hioki DT4211/4212 specs of 3 updates/sec, double AA battery, 4000 count with 0.5% DCV accuracy that it is based on some off the shelf IC like a Fortune Semiconductor FS9721.

This auction

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231179359943 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/231179359943)

shows a picture of the back with the rubber holster off.  Unfortunately, I can't tell from the low resolution picture where the meter was made.

Perhaps someone with better eyes or knows how to use a tool to sharpen the image?

edit: I think I see a T and 6 letters total, so my guess Made in Taiwan.

edit2: Hmm, similarities

I knew it was too good to be true. I am still interested to see inside though.

As far as manufacturers go, the Der EE multimeters are actually pretty decent. Not quite Brymen level but close and definitely not Chinese quality.

Dial positions are different
Edit:
Button functions are also different
Edit 2:
Like DE-243 except button functions are swapped
