HP E2050A Gateway | Can't Reset to Default
« on: April 21, 2021, 09:43:59 pm »
Recently acquired an HP E2050A off eBay, but can't seem to have the device reset to default settings.

Have tried combinations / lengths of holding the 'Config Preset' button while powering on but doesn't seem to have any effect.  Based on the manual, expect to see the 'Conn' LED flash after this but no such luck.

GPIB | SRQ LED remains on all the time which doesn't seem to be expected.  Fault LED doesn't come up either.  Anyone run into this?

gslick responds with some details on how to reset the unit from the console:

You can connect a terminal or PC running a terminal emulator to the E2050A RS-232 port using a null modem cable at 19200,N,8,1 and after hitting <CR> it should bring up the configuration menu.

Thanks - did see that and no result either.  Don't quite understand why the SRQ LED is on without any device plugged in as I believe that is reserved for devices.  Also seems that SRQ is actually idle, measures 5V on the GPIB Controller (SMJ9914A).

During power up of my E2050A the front panel LEDs briefly turn on in a few different patterns. After less than 10 seconds with nothing connected to the HP-IB / GPIB and LAN connectors the only LED that remains on is the Power LED.

If the SRQ LED remains on with your E2050A with nothing connected to the HP-IB / GPIB connector and you cannot get any response on the serial port with a null modem cable connection at 19200 baud, 8 bit, no parity, then maybe your E2050A has a hardware fault. If you just acquired it off of eBay, it might not be too surprising if it turns out to be dead.

Serial port output at 19200,N,8,1 after sending a CR to the E2050A after power up:

If you bought this one, unfortunately you might be out of luck:

This lot is for one HP E2050A GPIB HPIB Over IP Ethernet LAN Internet Converter Gateway.

On power up, LAN Tx and Rx lights don't activate and HP-IB SRQ light stays light, yellow. System function is unknown, offered here for parts.

This unit will arrive in the condition shown. It is being sold AS-IS and WITHOUT WARRANTY.

Thanks gslick - good thing I didn't pay seller's full price.  Looks like I got a paperweight.

I have the same problem with one E2050A. I have another that works. Here is the timing of the indicator light sequence:

TimeWorkingNot Working
0.0Power OnPower On
1.0Power, Fault, Conn, Talk, Listen, SRQPower, Fault, Conn, Talk, Listen, SRQ
2.0Power, SRQPower, SRQ
2.1Power, Listen, SRQPower, SRQ
2.2Power, ListenPower, SRQ
3.0Power, Talk, Listen, SRQPower, SRQ
3.1Power, Talk, SRQPower, SRQ
3.2PowerPower, SRQ
4.5Power, Tx, RxPower, SRQ
4.6PowerPower, SRQ
4.7Power, Tx, RxPower, SRQ
4.8PowerPower, SRQ

It seems that from around 1 second after power on to around 3 seconds it is testing the GPIB controller. The failed unit stops somewhere in the SRQ part of the test. Probing on the 68360 processor, it seems to get a /BERR (Bus Error). Other lines have activity consistent with /BERR being asserted.
