Post by: IconicPCB on April 25, 2017, 09:58:14 pm
Just acquired an Advantech UB data logger.
Wondering wihc way to gowith regards to programing it....  LabView or VEE?
Are there any other not-so-steep -learning-curve sofftware envirnments to consider?
LabView seems to be horribly expensive.

I used HP Vee about five years ago in a previous job. I found it horrendous. It often crashed, and it was very difficult to work with it for large projects or create libraries/modules. I'd only suggest it for small projects with a single developer. Version control will be a nightmare.

I do not have significant experience with LabView. But, my impression is that it is much more reliable than Vee, and is much more popular. I'd go with it if possible. Last I used it, it is not compatible with high-DPI monitors, so the graphics will be ugly or small.

LabView Student version for $20.00 at studica.com

But you need to be a student, or maybe you want to buy it for one of your kids that are on school.

I will use LabView, because it is widely used on the industry. I have heard and seen more job post requiring LabView knowledge

I'm writing my own s/w to control test equipment, using gawk (GNU awk) scripts running on a laptop with Cygwin (Linux environment). Later, I'll move the s/w to a raspberry pi.

gawk is turning out (IMHO) to be brilliant for this application. It's a lot of fun, writing code, and seeing it work. I set up remote VPN access to the test equipment LAN, so from off-site I can start, stop, and monitor experiments as they run, or set them up for overnight operation.

If you like Linux, you can do all this yourself, if you want.
