I have a nice Keysight E36313A bench power supply but I occasionally have to run some experiments with RC ESCs and motors, basically replacing big battery packs. The current and total power needed is way outside of the range of the Keysight.

I am looking to emulate up to a 12S battery pack (max 50.4V) at somewhere around 800-1200W and down to 2S (8.4V) at at least 20A (40+ would be nice), so basically up to 50V, up to 20-40A and 800-1200W.

A good quality switching power supply would probably work. Front panel digital controls and maybe USB/Ethernet control a plus. Sense terminals a plus.

The new Keysight E362xx are nice but only 400W and pricey.
The BK 9205 (60V 25A 600W) $1505 is within striking distance.
The BK 1902B (60V 15A 900W) $695 looks nice, but with just analog controls, no DC on/off button, I am hesitant.
Instek has a couple of newer (fancy LCD!) 800W models (160V 20A or 40V 80A) that are not bad (would really like a 80V 40A) although a bit pricey at ~$2k.
The Instek PSW-80-40.5 (80V, 40.5A, 1080W) is probably the closest, although it's also ~2k.

Any other recommendation? I'd rather avoid no-brand options. I have a Gophert CPS-6017 (60V, 17A, 1000W) which is actually not bad and cheap (that's what I am using now), but it has an unpleasant tendency to trip my GFI at higher power levels...

Thurlby Thandar Instruments have their PowerFlex products which provide a power limited envelope. Some of those will hit your requirements:

Prices are as always surprisingly affordable.

You might also want to take a look at the offerings from Delta Elektronika, not sure you're going to get one for under $2k though:

The SM 52-AR-60 seems to fit your requirements perfectly. Optional Ethernet, RS232, GPIB and what-not.

Good find! The QPX1200SP "Bench/System DC Power Supply Single Output, 60V/50A 1200W PowerFlex, USB/RS232/LAN/GPIB Interfaces" is pretty promising and competitively priced (compared to the other options at least) at $1558 in the US. The form factor is not great for me (pretty wide), but the rest looks good!

Thanks. Looks good too. I almost clicked on the "High Power System" model until I read that it's up to 900kW (5400A !!!). Not kidding about high power.

I need to search for a reseller - I am not finding pricing in the US right now.

Note that they have one more model not on the website but confirmed coming in the next month or two, the QPX750SP. This could be it.
80V 50A 750W (great V and A range, a tad short on power, but not a killer). Even has a nifty LCD panel and front sense terminals! $1550.

There's a whole class of rack mount power supplies that might be worth considering.  You can get 60V@18A in a 1U height.  The big brands in that area are Xantrex, Sorensen, and to a lesser extent, Agilent.

Last year I bought and repaired a similar Xantrex supply that was rated at 33V@33A.
