Title: HPAK Part Codenames
Post by: jjoonathan on February 28, 2019, 04:54:50 am
HP / Agilent / Keysight often has fun with assembly names. Sometimes this takes the form of acronyms, which are typically well documented in the service literature:

* RYTHM Tower (Router / YIG Tuned Harmonic Mixer)
* SPAM Module (Signal Processing / ADC Module)
* SODA (Source Oscillator + Doubler + Amplifier)

Others are probably internal codenames or something. They pop up on Keysight Find-A-Part and ebay all the time:

* Raven YTO (5087-7739)
* Quattro Bridge(5087-7301) -- 4-port PNA-L
* Cobra Bridge (5087-7794) -- PNA-X (43.5GHz, 26.5GHz, 13.5GHz, 8.5GHz)
* Kailua Bridge (5087-7752) -- PNA-L (20GHz, 13.5GHz, 8.5GHz)
* Napili Receiver () -- PNA-L
* Hana Coupler (5087-7710)  --  26.5 GHz PNA-X
* Lahaina Coupler (5087-7793) -- 50 GHz PNA
* Molokini Coupler () -- 50 GHz PNA-X
* Wyvern: DDS module powering many of the new SGs / SAs / VNAs

I often only discover them one-at-a-time even though they seem to be an ongoing thing, especially with the couplers. I feel like this is something we would be able to read about in the HP Journal if only it were still going. Sigh. Looks like it ended in '98. HP Journal: the only victim of Y2K?

Anyway, does anyone know anything they can share about these? Is there a list somewhere?

The names in the latter set do sound like code/project names. I don't have firsthand info about them. Maybe Daniel Bogdanoff will pop in and offer some insights.

Then there's the 8566 spectrum analyzer, in which the ACLU and CIA both play vital roles (Amplifier Coupler Load Unit and Coupler Interface Adapter, if I recall correctly).   :clap:

Updated with new information!

Oh yes, all the secret code names.  There's a new one "Wyvern".  We did a keysight webinar on it (new DDS chip in the VNA).  So here's the thing with code names: you know who the lab manager was based on the code name.  When we did the PNA-X project, the lab manager was a nut for Hawaii: so Hana (26.5 GHz PNA-X), followed by Lahaina (50 GHz) and you didn't ask but Molokini (50 GHz PNA-X).  Micro-circuits designed for a project often took on the project name (e.g. Lynx bridge was part of the 8753 project, with Cheetah being the new fast CPU version).   "Cobra was the bridge for the PNA-L and "Napili" was the high-performance noise figure receiver block (well, the PNA-X with the new noise receiver).   Oh, and of course Quattro (the design engineer for that is now the R&D manager for our Aerospace/Defense group) was the 4-port PNA-L.  Even I get confused.
