Interesting Alternative to a LISN
« on: December 21, 2020, 08:37:18 am »
I came across this device while surfing for a new LISN.

Looks like a  good product in concept. Dont know the price and know nothing about it.

There is a EDN by Wyatt which gives it the thumbs up

Considering what LISN's sell for it might be a perfect EMC diagnostic tool.

Anyone use one?

It is a nice tool to monitor AC content on power lines but it is not alternative for a LISN. The purpose of a LISN is that it provides a well defined (simulated) line impedance so you can make absolute measurements.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

So... it's >10nF, a resistor and a >300uH transformer?  Handy I suppose, if you're doing that sort of thing.

The isolation is interesting, I suppose one might save the isolation transformer in building a LISN, but still need isolation, for which a nice wideband transformer would do.  This can be patched on pretty much any time.

Nobody is suggesting that this device will take the place of  CISPR LISN.

It would make a handy pre-compliance  tool for design work. I suppose it would not take much to do a baseline comparison to see how much  error it has in terms of level measurements when comparing it to a true CISPR standard LISN

The circuit is published somewhere on the net.

It uses a Schaffner or other EMC line filter 2 coupling capacitors grounded through resistors and then a 20db attenuator for the receiver. Its simple enough to make and nothing special or CISPR certified! I suppose if you lazy you can just use a current probe!

I suppose a LISN is not something that you leave laying around on your workbench when doing devlopment or pre-compliance work!  A tool that can quickly do spot measurements without killing yourself or tripping the  RCD breakers would be handy.
