Title: Internal HW/SW architecture in Siglent SDS2000X and Siglent SDS2000X Plus
Post by: pascal_sweden on June 17, 2020, 05:14:27 pm
The SDS2000X series only goes up to 300 MHz, while the SDS2000X Plus series goes up to 350MHz/500MHz.
But both series have a 100MHz and a 200MHz model, and the older model still has its use!

The design on the outside is different for the newer model:
Bigger screen with higher resolution (improvement)
No individual channel knobs anymore (downgrade)
Buttons on the bottom of the screen are removed (downgrade)
Touch screen functionality has been added (improvement)
Extra USB port has been added (improvement)

But what about the internal hardware and software architecture of both oscilloscopes?
Is there are a big differences between both oscilloscopes?
Are the software updates compatible with each other?
Will the older Siglent SDS2000X still get new software updates?

I am asking this because the Siglent SDS2000X series could be offered at a reduced price,
and it might still be a valuable oscilloscope, if it is still officially supported with new software updates.

Older Siglent SDS2000X series:

Dave made a teardown video few days ago.
The only thing in common is the two ADC If they are the same.
The SDS2000X is a very old plateform, based on the SDS2000.
Its a 400Mhz Blackfin DSP IIRC.
There is no comparison possible. The SDS2000X is very expensive compared to the Plus one, even with promotions.
Just the 10inch touch screen justifies the price difference but the UI is much better and there is much more due to higher processing power.

Major difference: the old one has a Blackfin. The new one has a Zynq (ARM).

99% of the time im either using the screen menus or the horizontal knob

I'd be highly in favor of booting all of the knobs and buttons period for a bigger screen

Dunno why people make such a fuss over independent knobs for each channel... kinda over rated these days

I dont even use them at all.. i push the icon for the channel i want and it pops a menu to precision adjust my value or just hit the buttons on screen up/down

I think it's a habit to take.
I had a Rigol 1054Z and I hated shared controls .... but I had another oscilloscope that I used almost every day with separated control.
I would have to test with the SDS2000X Plus but we will stop talking about this right away or I will spend more money  :palm:

I think at first i will  |O a little bit by moving the wrong waveform.

Mostly.. Yeah

Now that I have a big touch screen there is no going back, ill never use push button menus again

Here too.
As a one who is used to work with lecroy stuff for years, I would get confused by using separate controls  ;D 8)
Also the howling about maybe missing auto-sense probing.
I plug in the probe, set the right ratio and done this inbetween 10 seconds….so why needing auto-sense...
At the opposite, I got some problems with auto-sense.
If the sense pin of the probe is somekind of dirty, the scope flips between 1:1 and 1:10, click-clack, click-clack...Annoying.
At least, when you use 1:100 or differential probes, you must set them manually.

No, for me it´s not - The screen is with 10" nicely big and touchy, it got more comfortable use it in this way instead of pressing knobs.

I only buy probes that are gold plated for the tips and the sense pin.. the siglent is gold plated as it should be, gold doesnt tarnish and cause an issue

same reason people go for gold tipped multi meter probes

Massive difference though!

I´ve asked the support for a block-diagram of the sds2k+, with named components...No chance.  8)

It is clear now that there is a different architecture between the Plus and the non-Plus version.

But the non-Plus version has a nicer layout.

Is it still worth to buy the older version? What discount should one expect in order to justify an older version?

Note that I don't mind the smaller screen and having no touch-screen. The buttons below the screen compensate for this IMO.
If the discount is right, and if there are still SW updates, it might be a good deal anyhow.
