Alternative to Segger J-Link EDU
« on: February 23, 2022, 10:21:50 pm »
Just for fun, I've decided to get a bit more serious about reverse engineering random products, and I've found a good jtag programmer is necessary. I've no particular MCU families in mind, so a versatile programmer would be paramount.

I had my sights set on the Segger J-Link EDU since it seems highly regarded, versatile, and cheap. Sadly it is out of stock the world over, with no end in sight.

Any suggestions for an alternative?

You can convert a cheap ST-Link v2 into a Jlink-EDU

https://www.segger.com/products/debug-probes/j-link/models/other-j-links/st-link-on-board/
Tested few times, could flash, then revert, no issues.
However didn't work very well in STM32 CubeIDE.

Yes, works well for me in visual studio, but STM32 only unless you have a way of modding their drivers.

Appreciate the suggestions.

Decided to just buy the older J-Link Base on the Fleabay.

You have the Mini version in the official store:

https://shop-us.segger.com/product/j-link-edu-mini-8-08-91/

It's better than most regular clones.

Actually back in stock now.  I guess they finally got their microcontroller delivery.

Looks like they did jack the price to $60 though.
