KEITHLEY 2000 vs HP 34401A
« on: June 09, 2018, 05:25:53 am »
It's the first time that i will buy a precision multimeter for developing a board. In my country  :) :) (México) are selling two used multimeters: a KEITHLEY 2000 for $200USD and an HP 34401A for also $200USD. This two masterpieces have similar specs but, i wanna know what do you recomend, in therms of year of fabrication, speeds, facility of repair, etc..., Which one is the best?

They're both great meters. And at that price, get both!

If you must choose one, some like the larger digits on the 34401A. If you get the K2000, be sure to check the electrolytic capacitors (there are threads here about changing them).

From the photos, it looks like the VFD in the 34401A is a lot brighter than the one in the K2000. However, it could be different in real life.

The "best" one is the one that fits your needs. Stating your requirements and what you'll use it for (what kind of boards are you designing) will help forum members help you better.

The K2000 digits are physically much thinner than the 34401A. I have a K2010 and have used a 34401A at work/school. I actually really like the fine digits of the Keithley, but ultimately, doesn't really matter. I think the fine digits of the Keithley will be harder to see with age, compared to the thicker HP digits. Both are constructed well. If they are at least 15 years old, I'd recommend re-capping them as mentioned above. Just beware of getting oils and dirt on the PCB as that can throw off some of the sensitive circuitry. You should clean flux residue off the board, but still try to clean as little as possible, if that makes sense.

From beeing used to use a Keithley 2015 (this is a 2000 in disguise) and a HPAK 34401A - I'd always prefer the 34401A.
This is for different reasons, each one of minor concern, but in total the 34401A is my preferred choice.

I have both - K2000 + Scanner Card (2014 build) and HP34401A (1996 build).
34401A has less noise floor - mentioned in several threads - thus a better precision. The VFD is easier to read from the distance.
The K2000 has a bit more functions.
I use the K2000 for multi-channel measurements/logging, the HP for single channel measuremnts/logging.
I can recommend both products.
