Keysight 34450A RS-232
« on: December 06, 2022, 07:26:58 pm »
Hi Guys,

I am trying to get rs-232 output from multimeter 34450A and not having any luck .

I have it enabled on front panel utility panel , Do i need to query it or should it just appear on my terminal program (teraterm)

Baudrate is configured to 9600 baud 8N1. Have tested port in teraterm with another device so i know teraterm is working .

Any suggestions?

Thanks

have you followed this from Keysight:
https://edadocs.software.keysight.com/kkbopen/how-can-i-set-up-rs-232-connection-on-34450a-dmm-614506321.html

Maybe you need an null modem cable  or the drs  dtr  crossover ?

Or

Tie the DSR pin (pin 6) on the RS-232 connector high like the 34401A

Yes I did follow that. But still no data through the port. I just thought I was missing something in setup.
I reached out to Keysight but no response from them.

I scoped the output lines RX  and TX  but nothing.

Do you suppose that RS232 is an option for this meter?

I dont know this meter, i'm not sure if it has a talk option like the 34401a

Talk means,  it will output the measured values only, no controls over rs232

In the user manual, they just say  cross the TX and RX  pins  between the meter and pc,  and the meter configurations settings

Do you use an USB to rs232 adapter ?

You could connect it with the usb cable,   you need usbtmc drivers or the keysight software .... if you want to control it,   use old  i/o library suite for the dmm connectivity software

IOLibSuite_17_1_19313.exe
DMM_Connectivity_Utility_1.0.2.0.exe

They support my 34410a ...  should do okay for the 34450a

no, i do not want to control it ,

Just want it to stream rs232 data

I have attached a pic of my wiring.

Its a new meter got it a couple months ago as a backup to an older HP 34401A. Part of a calibration fixture, so as one meter is sent out for cal, we can swap this new one in.

just found this ??

Question
How to Configure 34450A RS-232 Link?
Answer
An additional step to do before enabling the RS232 is to disable the USB connection, otherwise even by saving the parameter you will return to the USB setting by default

Thank you for those documents.

Keysight finally reached out to me so we will see what help they can provide.

I will update with when I know more.

Still no satisfaction from Keysight.

They said PC's usually do not come with RS-232 ports anymore.

I have replied and asked again if the RS-232 port works on this multimeter.
